"Sharing, Caring and Celebrating Each Day"
Celebrating 19 Years of Quality Care
The Ruth Sheets Adult Care Center is dedicated to offering the best possible care for our participants. Each participant is evaluated and a care plan is established to best fit his/her individual needs. The care plan is re-evaluated and adjusted at least every six months to adjust the program to the changing needs of each participant. Special care is given to meet physical and mental abilities and to maintaining daily living skills.
Each day is filled with stimulating activities which offer an opportunity for social interaction: physical games (such as indoor bowling, golf, exercise, and shuffleboard), trivia games and reminiscence for mental stimulation, and intergenerational relationships.
The Center is a home away from home filled with friendships, love, and a caring and dedicated staff.

Support Group Meetings
A caregivers’ support group meets every 2nd and 4th Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. in the ESUMC Parlor. This is a time to share concerns and needs in caring for your loved-one. The group is open to all in the community.

What is Adult Day Care?
It is a place for frail seniors to enjoy the company of their peers in a safe caring atmosphere with trained staff. A daily schedule of events keeps everyone socially, physically and mentally engaged.
Whom is Adult Day Care for?
Adult Day Care is for the frail senior who can no longer be left at home alone. It enables caregivers to have free time to take care of necessary obligations while knowing that their loved-one is safe and happy.
When is it the right time for placement?
It is important for your loved-one to have a social life and spend quality time with their peers to avoid a feeling of loneliness. It is also important that caregivers have time to rest, socialize or do something for themselves. The right time for placement is before depression and feelings of isolation overcome both the frail senior and the caregiver.
Placing a loved-one in Adult Day Care is a difficult decision for family members. Family members sometimes feel as though they are abandoning their loved-one and they recognize, perhaps for the first time that help is needed in their caregiving journey. The important thought to remember is that you are not doing something TO your loved-one; you are doing something FOR your loved-one.

ANNUAL FUND RAISER DINNER DANCE
The annual Red Rose Dinner Dance and Auction was held on March 6, 2010 in Kerr Hall at Edenton Street United Methodist Church with 211 people in attendance. Those in attendance enjoyed a wonderful dinner, silent and live auctions, music, and dancing by DJ Justin McGuire. There were over 250 items for bid that were generously donated by various local businesses, ESUMC members, Sheets Center Board members, and members of the community.
The ESUMC children’s Celtic and Crusader Choirs, and Liturgical Dance Ensemble presented a special program as the highlight of the 2010 Red Rose Benefit. “Try to Remember.” directed by Lou Wells and Josh Dumbleton was a story about a young boy who befriends an elderly woman with Alzheimer’s Disease. Through their friendship, she is able to recount her childhood memories. The beautiful story contained a powerful message, as well as familiar songs and original dance routines. Special thanks to the actors of the program: James Hoglund, Sally Thomas, Harry Moore, Conrad Glass, Judy Cox, Es’Dorn Westbrook, Clyde McDowell, and Susan McGuire. Also assisting in the program were Cindy Keen, Alice Sharpe, Dave Clemmer, Brook Gunter, and Eleanor Winegardner.
Mrs. Anne D. Beaty was honored for her service and dedication to the Center. Anne was a founding member of the Ruth Sheets Center and spent 20 years as a dedicated servant and leader for the elderly. Guest speaker, Mrs. Martha Lee Ellis, spoke on the importance of the Center to families in need and what the Center has meant to her and her late husband Michael, a former participant.
Many thanks to the Ruth Sheets Center Board, the Center’s Care Team, ESUMC staff and members: Linda Ford, Robin Ellison, Patsy Paris, Cecelia Holden, Custodial Staff, and Food Service Staff. Local high school student volunteers who were dining room servers for the event. The Center is grateful for all the community members who were instrumental in making this years event a tremendous success. The financial success of the event is due to everyone’s generous contributions, time, and hard work.

Volunteers, a Vital Part of the Center
Volunteers play a very important role at the Ruth Sheets Adult Care Center. Eddie comes every Wednesday and Friday and spends time talking one-on-one, playing checkers, and working on art projects with the participants. Eddie also assists staff with many tasks and has been a fixture at the Center since its start in 1991. Jackie plays the guitar and leads a sing-a-long twice a month for the participants. Ambrose leads devotions every Tuesday and has done this since we began in 1991. Claudia and her pet therapy dog Mitzi interact with the participants twice a month on Wednesday's. Edward, one of our newest volunteers, comes in on Mondays and Fridays to help staff and participants with setting up activities, preparing for lunch, and spending time talking with participants individually. These folks, giving freely of their time and talents, make the day brighter and more meaningful for all who participate. During the year students from local schools and universities come and entertain the participants with music, art, and story telling. Local church youth groups come and help with games and crafts during the summer. Special visits from church members who drop in just to say hello are always welcome. We are always looking for additional volunteers to come and share their talents with us. Please call or email for additional information on how you can help.
